Just about everyone has experienced that uneasy feeling that happens when your car's "check engine" light suddenly comes on. That's because what it means is not always clear. It could indicate a wide variety of problems, some major and some minor, anything from a loose gas cap to a severe drivetrain malfunction. And while it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to pull over right away and call a towing service, it does mean that you need to have your car checked out to identify the problem as soon as you can.
Sometimes your check engine light turns red and blinks, which usually indicates an issue that needs immediate attention. At other times, it may simply be a steady yellow, and although that probably means it's not an emergency, you still shouldn't take any chances. Whatever the problem is, your car thinks it's important enough to warn you about it, and ignoring it could lead to thousands of dollars in repairs and replacement parts that otherwise wouldn't have been necessary!
